University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) was established as an independent department of Panjab University, in the session 2004-05, to impart legal education to the students of B.A. LL. B. (Hons.) 5 years Integrated Course. During a short span, it has emerged as one of the premier legal institutes of India with a unique combination of tradition and modernity. Its mission is to equip students with the expertise to diagnose and solve the problems through legal analysis and reasoning. To hone up their 'DRAIN' skills .Drafting, Research, Advocacy, Interviewing and Negotiation- the Institute arranges a number of curricular and extra-curricular activities. Students are trained in techniques of procedural laws, essence of the substantive laws, methods of client counseling and skills of library and computer research. The Moot Court Competitions, Client Counseling Sessions, Quiz Contests, Seminars, Group Discussions and Extension Lectures etc. are a regular feature of the academic calendar of the Institute. Besides, to update the students about the contemporary issues and developments, the Institute brings out its research publications of different periodicity. It also offers an exchange programme, whereby students can attend classes and participate in the activities of other legal educational institutions. In addition, students get an insight into the 'law in action' through compulsory internships with Hon'ble Judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court, various commissions like NHRC, Competition Commission etc, Eminent Lawyers, Legal Firms and NGOs. This action 'process' together with discussions on sociological, linguistic, economical and political developments compels the students to understand that legal professionals play an important role as 'facilitators' of a wide range of personal, social, political, economic and legal transactions'. The steady growth of the institution has been recognized by many and the marvelous achievements of students have added to the efforts of the administration to pave UILS's path of glory.

INFRASTRUCTURE
The strong infrastructure of UILS significantly boosts its efforts to become a 'Center of Excellence'. It has an independent four storeyed building consisting of 18 spacious classrooms and other modern facilities. Besides, the institute houses one of the richest law libraries of the region. The Institute is in the process of establishing a world class 'Legal Skills Clinic' and well furnished separate 'Common Rooms' for Boys and Girls, a Conference Room, a Seminar Hall etc.

PUBLICATIONS
Since 2008, UILS has its own annual referred Journal with ISSN number called Journal of University Institute of Legal Studies. From 2010, the institute has started publishing .Legaleagle. a bi-annual Newsletter as well as a Student Journal. Both Newsletter and Student Journal are conceived, created and controlled by UILS students under the able guidance of the faculty.

PLACEMENT CELL
In today's fast changing world, building an effective career strategy is very important. UILS has a full functional placement cell to acts as an interface between the legal profession and the students. The cell works consistently to generate placement and training opportunities for the students. It organizes workshops and training programmes to enable the students of UILS to become successful professionals. The cell also facilitates the selection process by the legal firms, advocates, companies and NGO's etc as per their requirement.
